Movie #12 – Game Night

Game Night

The perfect ending to the marathon, Game Night is fun, funny, and has enough of a pace to keep sleepy marathoners awake through the final stretch.

Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s marathon! We raised over $1,000 for the Carolina Theatre across over 30 donations. Until next year…

Movie #11 – The Other Guys

The Other Guys

Fantastic satire that makes you really think about the action films you love. Or not, really, because this movie fills the same hole just by making fun of the others.

A fantastic ease into the end of the night, as we go to the 12th film, GAME NIGHT.

Movie #10 – Shoot ‘Em Up

Shoot ‘Em Up

This movie knows exactly what it is, and is unapologetic about it. The world it creates has such strange details, and is so mildly dystopian that it could be the start of a wild series.

This movie is a fantastic lead in to the next movie in the marathon: The Other Guys.

Movie #9 – Sahara

This is the epitome of the desert adventure movie, and the inclusion of Matthew McConaughey lifts it to another level entirely. Steve Zahn, Penelope Cruz, and William H Macy round up the cast to something fun.

The tone stays fun even when the subject matter gets pretty dang dark. I’d say this is stereotypical mid 2000’s adventure film (which isn’t a bad thing).

Movie #8 – Sleeping With Other People

Sleeping With Other People

This movie reminds me a lot of the vibe of “Drinking Buddies” as a type of alternative rom-com that is more a meditation on modern relationships than it is the typical formula.

Really explicit, so watch with caution if you have kids!

Movie #7 – The Limey

The Limey

An interesting mix of “Taken” with nostalgic day dreams and some of the best British accenting I’ve ever heard.

I enjoyed the editing style, this is perfect for someone in the mood for action at a fairly slow and steady pace.

Movie #6 – Salt

Now this is a satisfying romp into the battle of the international spy agencies. Covert sleep agents, deep-seeded into foreign governments… epic action, and the twists!

This was not my first watch and it won’t be my last!

Movie #5 – Dark City

Dark City

Suitably advanced science can seem like magic… so this sci fi thriller has tons of the apparent supernatural in it. There’s one resounding message in this film, and that’s that you can’t quantify the human soul… and if you think you can, that’s exactly why you’ll lose.

We just broke last year’s fundraising record… let’s keep it up!

Movie #3 – The Villainess

The Villainess

This film has some stellar action sequences, and the fight choreography is quite good. The story is all over the place though and doesn’t really resolve in a super satisfying way. We thought it was dangerous to have a movie with subtitles, but putting this early in the lineup made it doable. The coffee helped, too.

We’re officially 1/4 through the marathon!
